Specimen Required: | Patient Preparation: Patient should fast for 12 hours and abstain from alcohol for 24 hours prior to collection. For those who are younger than six months, draw prior to next feeding. Blood should be collected before breakfast in the morning and prior to any medication.
Collect: Serum Separator Tube (SST) OR Red Top Tube - 0.7 ml serum

Performing Laboratory Specimen Preparation: Allow specimen to clot completely at room temperature . Separate serum from cells ASAP or within 2 hours of collection. Transfer serum to an Amber Transport Tube. Protect from light during storage, and shipment.
If amber tubes are unavailable, cover standard transport tube completely, top and bottom, with aluminum foil.
Storage/Transport Temperature: Room temperature.
Stability: After separation of cells: Refrigerated: 1 week; Frozen: 14 days
Unacceptable Conditions: Any specimen other than serum. Hemolyzed or icteric specimens. Not protected from light.
