Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase

Methodology: N/A
Performed: Mon, Wed, Fri
Reported: 2-3 days
Specimen Required: Specimen requirement
Type: Lavender (EDTA)  - 1 ml whole blood
Specimen preparation: Mix 1 part whole blood with 9 part Red Cell Lysing Reagent to obtain a homogenous hemolysate. Assay immediately after preparation of hemolysate. G-6-PDH activity is unstable in hemolysate.
Storage/Transport: REFRIGERATED
Stability: Red cell G-6-PDH is stable in whole blood for one week refrigerated (2–8°C), but is unstable in red cell hemolysates. Freezing of blood is not recommended.
Since activity is reported in terms of number of red blood cells or grams hemoglobin, the red cell count or hemoglobin concentration should be determined prior to performing the G-6-PDH assay.

NOTE: * This test is not available for New York patients, please refer to test code Q398 for specimen requirements.*
