| Specimen Required: | Collect: Serum Separator Tube (SST) - 0.5 ml Specimen preparation: Serum free from hemolysis is the recommended specimens. Allow blood samples to clot (15 mins). Separate the serum from the cells by centrifuging for 10 minutes. Store serum at 2-8°C until analysis. Storage/Transport: Refrigerated Stability: To minimize increases in homocysteine concentration from synthesis by red blood cells, process specimens as follows: - Place all specimens (serum) on ice after collection and prior to
processing. Serum may clot more slowly and the volume may be reduced.
- All specimens may be kept on ice for up to 6 hours prior to separation by centrifugation.
Specimens not placed on ice immediately may exhibit a 10% to 20% increase in homocysteine concentration.
