Specimen Required: Patient Preparation: No special preparation for the patient is required. The patient’s clinical condition and dosage regimen may influence the sample collection time.

Collect: Serum Separator Tube (SST) OR Red Top Tube (if serum was separated ASAP) - 0.5 ml
     
It is recommended that a standardized 12hr-post dose serum lithium concentration be used to assess adequate therapy.  Peak concentration is reached 2 to 4 hours after oral dosing. 
       
Specimen preparation: Serum free from hemolysis is the recommended specimens Allow blood samples to clot (15 mins). Separate the serum from the cells by centrifuging for 10 minutes. Store serum at 2-8°C until analysis.  

Storage/Transport: Refrigerated

Stability: Lithium samples are stable for one week when stored at 2-8 °C and stable indefinitely frozen <-20°C
