Ova and Parasites, Concentrate and Permanent Smear

Specimen Required: Collect: Stool in Formalin OR Stool in O&P Kit OR Urine in a Sterile Container OR Sputum in a Sterile Container - 10g 

Specimen Preparation: 
Stool: Send sample in a 10% formalin container or in a ova&parasite kit; Urine: Urine may be submitted unpreserved for exam for Schistosoma. Collect at mid day. Do not submit first morning specimen. In patients with hematuria, eggs may be found trapped in blood and mucous in the terminal portion (last-voided portion) of the specimen. 
Sputum: The specimen should be a deep expectorated sputum, preferably collected in the early morning. A 24 hour sputum collection is also acceptable. Submit in a sterile screw-capped container. 
Storage/Transport Temperature: Stool, Sputum : Room Temperature; Urine: Refrigerated Stability: Urine: Refrigerated 48 hours; Stool: Room Temperature: 1 week; Sputum: Unpreserved: Refrigerated 48 hours, In Formalin: Room Temperature: 48 hours. 
Reject Criteria: Unpreserved stool; received frozen; stool submitted in expired transport vial; preserved urine; unpreserved sputum and urine received room temperature or frozen.
