Specimen Required:

Patient Preparation: Patient should fast for 12 hours.

 

Collect: Lithium heparin or Sodium heparin (green-top) plasma OR Serum Separator Tube (SST) OR Red-top serum - 0.5 ml plasma or serum. 

Protect from light during storage and shipment.

 

Specimen Preparation: Separate serum or plasma from cells.  Transfer plasma/serum specimen to labeled amber plastic transport tube . 

Storage/Transport Temperature: Frozen.

Stability : After separation from cells: Ambient/Refrigerated: Unacceptable; Frozen: 7 days

Causes for Rejection: Receipt of hemolyzed specimen; a specimen not protected from light; a specimen outside of stability; any specimen other than serum or plasma.
